Chapel Discussion on “Conscience is the Most Sacred of all Property”
What is the most important thing that each of us owns? The Conscience.
Who gave us our conscience? God gave it to us.
What is the conscience? It is the principle within in us that decides what is right and what is wrong.
Do you have to read the Bible to know what is right and wrong? No, we don’t have to. We should read our Bibles, and it will help us better to know what is right and wrong, but even people who don’t read the Bible know what is right and wrong.
Can anyone tell me why? Because God has written his law in our hearts. Now because of sin our consciences get garbled up, but generally speaking people even non-Christians know what is right and wrong.
Here is a conscience test? am going to ask a question, and if you have an answer raise your hand. If you have a sibling (that is a brother or a sister), is it ever ok to hit them over the head with a book. No, it probably isn’t ok. We would be breaking the sixth commandment. Would it ever be ok to hit them over the head with a book?
Now let’s say this sibling comes into the room and says, “Mother left you a cupcake on the table on the kitchen table, but I was hungry and I ate it, sorry”. Would it be ok to hit them over the head with a book, now? So, let’s suppose you did hit them over the head with a book. Now to hit them over the head with a book, you would have to consent to it. There is an exchange that goes on in your conscience that says, I wouldn’t normally hit them over the head with a book, but they ate my cupcake so they deserve this book on the head.
So this is where reading your Bible helps. Now when my brother says sorry, I ate your cupcake, how can I respond in a godlier way. I can respond by forbearing his sin against me, and say something like are you still hungry, let me make you a peanut butter sandwich. Or I can’t forbear, I can report the incident to my mother, that knucklehead brother of mine ate my cupcake.
Our conscience is the most import thing we own. We need to care for it by reading our Bible, and obeying God and following his commandments.
Hebrew 5:14 But solid food (solid food here is reading your Bible, going to church, listening to your mother) is for the mature (studied up believers), who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
